Robert Charles Bull, MD, FRCSC, died on Sept. 7, 2024, in Toronto, Ont., at age 89. Dr. Bull was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1963. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1958. Dr. Bull was the doctor for Team Canada Hockey from 1972 to 1991, including during the 1972 Canada versus USSR series. He ran a successful practice in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery in Weston, Ont., and was an orthopedic surgeon at Humber Hospital from 1964 to 2009. Read more about Dr. Bull.

Yun Kai Chan, MD, FRCPC, died on Jan. 2, 2025, in Niagara Falls, Ont., at age 70. Dr. Chan was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1985. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 1981. Dr. Chan dedicated his career to Internal Medicine, practicing in Niagara Falls from 1985 until his retirement in 2019. He was a respected and compassionate physician who was passionate about sharing his knowledge with medical students and junior colleagues. For over two decades, he single-handedly implanted pacemakers in Niagara Falls. Read more about Dr. Chan.

John Alfred Collins, MD, FRCSC, died on Feb. 17, 2025, in Mader’s Cove, N.S., at age 88. Dr. Collins was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1965. He obtained his medical degree from Western University in 1960. Dr. Collins is widely recognized for his groundbreaking research and advocacy for women’s reproductive health across the globe. Among many senior positions, he served as president of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada and head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Dalhousie University. He also served as a member of the Royal College’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Examination Board from 1973 to 1981. Read more about Dr. Collins.

Valsa Daniels, MBBS, FRCPC, died on Oct. 7, 2024, in Winnipeg, Man., at age 77. Dr. Daniels was certified by the Royal College in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 1984. She obtained her medical degree from Mysore Medical College and Research Institute in India in 1971. Dr. Daniels was chief of the stroke unit at the University of Manitoba teaching hospital for 25 years and associate professor in the Department of Medicine. She won many outstanding teaching awards from the University of Manitoba, voted on by medical students and residents. Read more about Dr. Daniels.

David William Easton, MD, FRCPC, died on Dec. 19, 2024, in Winnipeg, Man., at age 54. Dr. Easton was certified by the Royal College in Emergency Medicine in 2000 and Critical Care Medicine in 2002. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1995. Dr. Easton devoted much of his life to his love of medicine and care for his patients. He served as medical director of the ICU department at Concordia Hospital and the ICU/ER at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. Dr. Easton taught many young physicians at the University of Manitoba, brought countless innovations to the Critical Care program in Manitoba, and worked with Lifeflight to fly into remote communities. He also served as a member of the Royal College’s Emergency Medicine Committee from 2006 to 2007. Read more about Dr. Easton.

Abraham Fuks, OC, MD, FRCPC, died on Dec. 1, 2024, in Montreal, Que., at age 78. Dr. Fuks was certified by the Royal College in Clinical Immunology in 1974. He obtained his medical degree from McGill University in 1970. A distinguished physician, researcher and academic, Dr. Fuks made profound contributions to medical science, education and ethics. He was dean of the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University from 1995 to 2006 and served as the university’s research integrity officer from 2009 to 2014. He also served as a member of the Royal College’s Residency Accreditation Committee from 1995 to 1999. Read more about Dr. Fuks.

John Steele Graham, MD, FRCSC, died on Feb. 14, 2024, in Vernon, B.C., at age 93. Dr. Graham was certified by the Royal College in Ophthalmology in 1967. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Alberta in 1955. Dr. Graham ran his popular ophthalmological practice for 31 years. In retirement, he travelled to treat patients in isolated areas of Peru and Columbia, performing his last surgical procedure at age 80. Dr. Graham served as chief of staff at Vernon Jubilee Hospital and past president of the British Columbia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. Read more about Dr. Graham.

Roberto Leon, MD, FRCSC, died on Dec. 21, 2024, in Kelowna, B.C., at age 69. Dr. Leon was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1991. He obtained his medical degree from Universidad Nacional de Asunción Facultad de Medicina in Paraguay in 1979. Dr. Leon was a distinguished physician, with qualifications to practice as a specialist in Canada, the U.K., South Africa and the U.S. He held many positions, including medical director for Interior Health Perinatal Services and president of the Kelowna Medical Society. He was known to his patients for his kindness, humour and generosity. Read more about Dr. Leon.

Daniel Brian J. O’Brien, MDCM, FRCSC, died on Feb. 19, 2025, in Halifax, N.S., at age 93. Dr. O’Brien was certified by the Royal College in Ophthalmology in 1964. He obtained his medical degree from Dalhousie University in 1957. Dr. O’Brien set up practice in Shediac, N.B., where he taught himself French so he could work effectively in the rural, Francophone community. Dr. O’Brien was a leader in the development of modern treatment for eye disease in Atlantic Canada, and hundreds of ophthalmologists benefitted from his teaching. He operated into his late sixties and was renowned for spending countless nights and weekends in the operating room. Read more about Dr. O’Brien.

Michael Angelo A. Romeo, MD, FRCPC, died on Jan. 30, 2025, in Hamilton, Ont., at age 88. Dr. Romeo was certified by the Royal College in Diagnostic Radiology in 1967. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1961. Dr. Romeo was a radiologist at Hamilton General Hospital for over 40 years, where he served as chief of the Radiology Department. An excellent leader and people person, he was beloved by his staff, and they kept his lab coat hanging in the department long after he retired. Read more about Dr. Romeo.

Ignazio Scime, MD, FRCPC, died on Sept. 7, 2024, in Hamilton, Ont., at age 93. Dr. Scime was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1962. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 1956. Dr. Scime was a well-respected gastroenterologist in Hamilton, serving the community at St. Joseph’s Hospital for over 40 years, where he was appointed president of the medical staff in 1974. He also joined the McGregor clinic in 1962 and became chief of Medicine in 1975. Read more about Dr. Scime
