Shiu Fai Chan, MD, FRCPC, died on Sept. 27, 2020, in Port Alberni, B.C., at age 87. Dr. Chan was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1966. He obtained his medical degree from the National Defense Medical Center School of Medicine in Taiwan in 1959. Dr. Chan was the first resident internist at West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni, where he worked for many years. Known for his dedication to his patients, Dr. Chan received the Doctors of BC Silver Medal of Service award in 2002. Read more about Dr. Chan.
Arthur Charles Klassen, MD, FRCPC, died on July 9, 2022, in Minneapolis, Minn., at age 89. Dr. Klassen was certified by the Royal College in Neurology in 1968. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1957. Dr. Klassen worked at and helped build the University of Minnesota Department of Neurology. He was a professor and physician at the University of Minnesota Medical School for 48 years, including many years as Neurology Department chair. Read more about Dr. Klassen.
Paul Milos, MD, FRCPC, died on May 14, 2023, in Windsor, Ont., at age 89. Dr. Milos was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1964. He obtained his medical degree from Queen’s University in 1959. Dr. Milos served as a member of one of the Royal College’s regional advisory committees from 1987 to 1991. He and his wife, Mrs. Barbara Milos, established the Kristen Milos Medical Award at Western University in honour of their daughter, Kristen Milos. Read more about Dr. Milos.
Dominic Sun-Kuen Ng, MD, FRCPC, died on Nov. 4, 2024, in North York, Ont., at age 71. Dr. Ng was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1992 and Endocrinology and Metabolism in 1993. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1988. Dr. Ng was associate professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He was also staff endocrinologist at St. Michael's Hospital and scientist at the Keenan Research Center, Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute in Toronto. Read more about Dr. Ng.
Peter Michael Rees, MBChB, FRCPC, died on Jan. 23, 2022, in West Vancouver, B.C., at age 79. Dr. Rees was certified by the Royal College in Neurology in 1975. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Oxford Medical Sciences Division in 1969. Dr. Rees will be remembered as a caring, conscientious clinical neurologist who was valued in Burnaby, B.C., and at outreach clinics in Fort St. John, Dawson Creek and Powell River. Pierre Saint-Jean, MD, FRCPC, died on Nov. 9, 2024, in Montréal, Que., at age 79. Dr. Saint-Jean was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1974. He obtained his medical degree from the Université de Montréal in 1970. A child psychiatrist for 40 years, Dr. Saint-Jean will be remembered for always putting the well-being of children at the heart of his career. Read more about Dr. Saint-Jean.
Thomas Sprague, MD, FRCPC, died on Dec. 7, 2024, in Sherwood Park, Alta., at age 41. Dr. Sprague was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 2017 and General Internal Medicine in 2019. He obtained his medical degree from the University of British Columbia in 2013. Dr. Sprague will be remembered as a passionate and highly respected physician who balanced pragmatism with care and compassion for his patients and their families. Considered an “internist’s internist,” Dr. Sprague was an admired colleague and medical educator. Read more about Dr. Sprague.
John Peter Whitelaw, MD, FRCPC, died on July 13, 2024, in Nanaimo, B.C., at age 81. Dr. Whitelaw was certified by the Royal College in General Pathology in 1978. He obtained his medical degree from McGill University in 1973. Dr. Whitelaw had a distinguished career in General Pathology, becoming site chief of laboratories and chief pathologist for the Vancouver Island Health Authority at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). He completed terms as president of the medical staff and chief of staff at NRGH, and president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. Read more about Dr. Whitelaw.
