Specialty Training Requirements in Obstetrics and Gynecology

These training requirements apply to those who begin training on or after July 1st, 2016.

MINIMUM TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Five (5) years of approved residency. This period must include:

  1. Two (2) years of Surgical Foundations training in the core aspects of surgery related to Obstetrics and Gynecology. This period is under the direction of the Obstetrics and Gynecology program director in conjunction with the Surgical Foundations director. This foundational period must include:
    1. A minimum of sixteen (16) and maximum of eighteen (18) blocks in Obstetrics and Gynecology
    2. One (1) block in critical care
    3. A minimum of one (1) block on a service that provides initial trauma management, such as Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, trauma team, Orthopedic Surgery, or Plastic Surgery
    4. Two (2) blocks in Internal Medicine
    5. A minimum of one (1) and maximum of two (2) blocks in General Surgery
    6. Two (2) to three (3) blocks of selectives, chosen from a minimum of two (2) of the following:
      1. Adolescent medicine
      2. Anesthesia
      3. Critical care medicine
      4. Diagnostic imaging
      5. Emergency medicine
      6. Integrated medicine/alternative medicine
      7. Internal medicine (or subspecialty)
      8. Medical genetics
      9. Neonatal medicine
      10. Obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound
      11. Palliative medicine
      12. Pathology
      13. Psychiatry
      14. Urology
      15. Scholarly activity, including but not limited to clinical or basic science research, quality assurance, and medical education
  2. Three (3) years of additional residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology, which must include:
    1. A minimum of three (3) blocks in each of:
      1. Maternal-fetal medicine
      2. Gynecologic oncology
      3. Gynecological reproductive endocrinology and infertility
    2. Two (2) blocks of urogynecology
    3. One (1) block of community-based obstetrics and gynecology
    4. One (1) block of obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound, if not already completed in years PGY1-2
    5. Seventeen (17) blocks on selective rotations, which must include at least four (4) of the following:
      1. Ambulatory obstetrics and gynecology
      2. Colposcopy
      3. Community-based obstetrics and gynecology
      4. Critical care medicine
      5. Endoscopic surgery
      6. Gynecologic oncology
      7. Gynecologic pathology
      8. Gynecologic reproductive endocrinology and infertility
      9. Maternal-fetal medicine
      10. Obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound
      11. Pediatric and adolescent gynecology
      12. Pelvic pain investigations and management
      13. Research in obstetrics and gynecology
      14. Sexual medicine
      15. Urogynecology
    6. Three (3) blocks of elective rotations. This period of training will be in an area to be chosen by the resident and approved by his/her program director. This may be in an area included in the list of selectives shown above.
    7. A minimum of six (6) blocks of chief residency experience (PGY4 or 5) in Obstetrics and Gynecology in which the resident will, under supervision, consolidate skills for independent practice. He/she will provide care for ambulatory patients and inpatients with complex problems and will have administrative and educational responsibilities.

NOTES:

Credit for training in the United States of America

Those who have completed four (4) years of residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited programs in the United States of America may fulfil the requirements above if they also complete one of the following:

  1. One (1) year of American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) accredited clinical fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, or Gynecologic Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, or urogynecology/reconstructive pelvic surgery
  2. or

  3. Current ABOG certification as a Diplomate in Obstetrics and Gynecology

REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION:

Royal College certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology requires all of the following:

  1. Successful completion of the 2-year Royal College Surgical Foundations curriculum;
  2. Successful completion of the Royal College Surgical Foundations examination;
  3. Successful completion of a 5-year Royal College accredited program in Obstetrics and Gynecology;
  4. Participation in a scholarly research, quality assurance, or educational project relevant to Obstetrics and Gynecology; and
  5. Successful completion of the certification examination in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The 5-year program outlined above is to be regarded as the minimum training requirement. Additional training may be required by the program director to ensure that clinical competence has been achieved.
