Specialty Training Requirements in
Neurology

These training requirements apply to those who begin training on or after July 1^st, 2011.

MINIMUM TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

1. ADULT NEUROLOGY

   Five (5) years of approved residency training. This period must include:

   1. Twenty-four (24) months of foundational training, to include:
      1. Ten (10) months of clinical training in Internal Medicine. This must include:
         1. A minimum of two (2) months on an Internal Medicine clinical teaching unit (CTU) or its equivalent
         2. A minimum of one (1) month in Critical Care Medicine
         3. A minimum of one (1) month and maximum of two (2) months each in selective subspecialty rotations in Internal Medicine, which may include:
            1. Endocrinology
            2. Geriatrics
            3. Internal Medicine consultation
            4. Internal Medicine ambulatory care
            5. Cardiology
            6. Infectious Disease
            7. Emergency Medicine
            8. Rheumatology
            9. Other Internal Medicine rotations approved by the Neurology program director
      2. Fourteen (14) months of training pertinent to adult Neurology, which must include:
         1. A maximum of four (4) months of further clinical training in Internal Medicine
         2. A minimum of two (2) months in clinical neurology
         3. A minimum of three selective rotations, each of one (1) to two (2) months duration, in any of:
            1. Psychiatry
            2. Neurosurgery
            3. Neuroradiology
            4. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
            5. Emergency Medicine
            6. Pain/palliative care
            7. Neuro-ophthalmology
            8. Neuro-oncology
            9. Clinical electrophysiology
            10. Research
   2. Thirty-six (36) months of further residency training, to include:
      1. Two (2) years of training in clinical Neurology. This must include:
         1. A minimum of eighteen (18) months in adult Neurology which must incorporate, in aggregate, a minimum of:
            1. Four (4) months in general or subspecialty Neurology clinics
            2. Six (6) months of direct patient care on a Neurology CTU or its equivalent, including at least two (2) months in PGY4 or PGY5 as a senior resident with increased responsibility
         2. A minimum of three (3) months in pediatric Neurology
      2. Twelve (12) months of residency training or research pertinent to Neurology. This must include in aggregate:
         1. A minimum of one (1) month in Neuropathology
         2. A minimum of two (2) months in clinical electrophysiology
         3. A minimum of one (1) month in Neuroradiology
         4. A minimum of one (1) month devoted to a scholarly project
2. PEDIATRIC NEUROLOGY

   Five (5) years of approved residency training. This period must include:

   1. Twenty-four (24) months of foundational training, to include:
      1. Twelve (12) months of clinical training in Pediatrics. This must include:
         1. A minimum of three (3) months on a general Pediatrics clinical teaching unit (CTU) or its equivalent
         2. A minimum of one (1) month in pediatric Critical Care Medicine
         3. A minimum of one (1) month and a maximum of two (2) months each in selective subspecialty rotations in Pediatrics, which may include:
            1. Developmental Pediatrics
            2. Neonatology
            3. Endocrinology
            4. General pediatric consultation
            5. General pediatric ambulatory care
            6. Cardiology
            7. Infectious Disease
            8. Emergency Medicine
            9. Rheumatology
            10. Other Pediatric rotations approved by the Neurology program director
      2. Twelve (12) months of training pertinent to pediatric Neurology. This must include:
         1. A maximum of eight (8) months in Pediatrics
         2. A minimum of two (2) months in clinical Neurology
         3. A minimum of three selective rotations, each of one (1) to two (2) months duration, in any of:
            1. Psychiatry
            2. Neurosurgery
            3. Neuroradiology
            4. Genetics
            5. Metabolics
            6. Embryology
            7. Neonatal neurology
            8. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
            9. Pain/palliative care
            10. Neuro-ophthalmology
            11. Neuro-oncology
            12. Clinical electrophysiology
            13. Research
   2. Thirty-six (36) months of further residency training, to include:
      1. Two (2) years of training in clinical Neurology. This must include:
         1. A minimum of eighteen (18) months in pediatric Neurology, which must incorporate, in aggregate, at least:
            1. Five (5) months in general or subspecialty Neurology clinics
            2. Five (5) months on an inpatient Neurology consultation service or CTU or its equivalent, including at least two (2) months in PGY4 or PGY5 as a senior resident with increased responsibility
         2. Six (6) months in adult Neurology
      2. Twelve (12) months of residency training or research pertinent to Neurology. This must include in aggregate:
         1. A minimum of one (1) month in Neuropathology
         2. A minimum of two (2) months in clinical electrophysiology
         3. A minimum of one (1) month in Neuroradiology
         4. A minimum of one (1) month devoted to a scholarly project

NOTES:

REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION

Rotations completed in 1.2 may be counted as credit toward the same rotations required in 2.1 and 2.2.

Royal College certification in Neurology requires all of the following:

1. Successful completion of a 5-year Royal College accredited program in Neurology; or successful completion of a 4-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - accredited Neurology program with certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) plus completion of one year of specialty experience and possession of an unrestricted licence to practice medicine in the United States or Canada; and
2. Successful completion of the certification examination in Neurology.

The program outlined above is to be regarded as the minimum training requirements. Additional training may be required by the program director to ensure that clinical competence has been achieved.
